Bénin cracks down on international crime with three fugitive arrests

In a bold move to curb transnational organized crime, the Republic of Benin’s law enforcement has ramped up cross-border operations to dismantle criminal networks and track down fugitives exploiting international routes. The mission is unequivocal: prevent Benin from becoming a safe haven for individuals wanted by global justice systems. Aligned with the efforts of the Judicial Police Directorate, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Cotonou executed a week-long coordinated crackdown from April 13 to 19, 2026, culminating in the capture of three high-profile fugitives sought by multiple nations.

Global fugitives intercepted in coordinated Benin operations

On April 15, a Nigerian national—wanted by Lagos authorities for alleged involvement in multiple homicides between 2023 and 2024—was apprehended in Cotonou. The suspect, whose escape had been widely publicized by Lagos State Police, was tracked down to a hotel room where he had been hiding under false pretenses.

The same day, another operation led to the arrest at Bernardin Gantin International Airport of a suspect pursued by U.S. authorities in a major fraud case. The individual had fled the United States in haste, only to be intercepted upon entering Benin.

A few days later, on April 19, French authorities’ efforts bore fruit when a national sought for alleged ties to transnational organized crime was detained in Cotonou. Investigators revealed he had constructed multiple fake identities to evade detection, but relentless undercover surveillance over several weeks ultimately exposed his whereabouts and led to his capture.

Extradition processes underway for transnational fugitives

Following their arrests, the Nigerian fugitive was handed over to his home country’s authorities under the ECOWAS police cooperation agreement. Meanwhile, extradition proceedings for the remaining suspects are progressing through diplomatic channels, ensuring justice is served across borders.

Benin’s stance against international crime

These targeted operations underscore Benin’s unwavering commitment to combating transnational organized crime, reinforcing its dedication to international policing collaboration, and firmly rejecting any role as a refuge for fugitives—regardless of their origins or alleged crimes. By dismantling these networks and extraditing suspects, the Republic of Benin reaffirms its role as a proactive partner in global security efforts.
