A coordinated assault by fighters from the Boko Haram insurgent group has claimed the lives of several Nigerien soldiers near the garrison town of N’Guigmi, in the Diffa region of southeastern Niger. The attack unfolded on Friday morning, targeting a military outpost close to the strategic Lake Chad basin—a shared border area with Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad.

Military base targeted in n’guigmi

Local residents and military sources confirmed the assault on the security forces’ position outside N’Guigmi, a town that has become a focal point for cross-border militant activity. The attackers launched their offensive before dawn, disrupting the area’s fragile calm and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Casualties and ongoing operations

A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns, told reporters that ten soldiers were killed in the raid. The witness also reported that some assailants were also neutralized during the clash, while the military launched immediate follow-up operations to secure the perimeter.

Social media posts from N’Guigmi residents suggested a potentially higher death toll, citing four National Guard members among the fatalities. Official statements from the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP) acknowledged the incident but did not provide specific casualty figures, confirming only that military personnel perished in the attack on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.

General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, regional governor of Diffa, personally oversaw the burial of the fallen soldiers shortly after the assault, according to local reports.

Escalating insecurity in the lake Chad basin

N’Guigmi has emerged as a hotspot for jihadist activity since 2009, hosting factions from both Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP). The vast, marshy expanses of Lake Chad continue to serve as a hideout for armed groups, enabling cross-border raids into neighboring countries.

The insurgency, which began in northeastern Nigeria, has since spilled over into the wider Sahel, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing millions. Niger, Chad, and Cameroon have all borne the brunt of this violence, with communities along the lake’s shores facing persistent threats.

Regional efforts and persistent challenges

In response to the growing threat, the Lake Chad Basin Commission’s Multinational Joint Task Force—established in 1994—has intensified counterinsurgency operations. Chad recently conducted airstrikes and ground offensives against Boko Haram hideouts on remote lake islands, with support from Nigeria and Niger.

However, Niger continues to grapple with additional security challenges in its western regions, where armed factions linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have escalated attacks. Since the military takeover in July 2023, the transitional government has struggled to curb the violence, leaving civilians and security forces vulnerable.
