Algeria and Niger launch oil exploration at Kafra South field
Partnership takes a concrete step forward with Kafra South-East 1 drilling
As part of efforts to strengthen strategic ties between Algiers and Niamey, drilling operations for the exploratory well Kafra South-East 1 have officially commenced. The milestone event, held on 13 August 2026, marks a pivotal moment for energy cooperation across North and West Africa.
Strategic energy project kicks off in northern Niger
Initiated at the Kafra oil field in the northern region of Niger, the launch ceremony brought together high-level delegations from both nations. Representing Algeria, Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb joined his counterpart from Niger, Ali Lamine Zeine Mahaman, to co-chair the event.
Prime Minister Ghrieb was received by a Nigerian delegation comprising government officials and senior leaders. His entourage included key figures such as:
- Mohamed Arkab, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Hydrocarbons;
- Lounès Magramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
- Noureddine Daoudi, CEO of Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach;
- Saadi Ahmed, Algeria’s Ambassador to Niger.
The drilling of the Kafra South-East 1 well represents Sonatrach’s direct contribution to expanding Niger’s oil production potential.
From political commitment to tangible economic partnership
This initiative aligns with the strategic roadmap agreed upon by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Niger’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani. Both leaders have emphasized their shared commitment to deepening bilateral relations and fostering cooperation rooted in mutual respect and regional solidarity.
