Trump reaffirms US support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara
Moroccan monarch receives Trump’s message on National Throne Day
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, celebrated on July 30, King Mohammed VI received a message from American President Donald Trump. In the correspondence, Trump reiterated the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole viable resolution to this long-standing territorial dispute.
«The United States is unequivocal: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a serious, credible, and realistic framework for a just and lasting solution,» Trump stated in the message.
Highlighting the urgency of ending the stalemate, the US leader emphasized that «any alternative path only prolongs the status quo,» which he deemed «unacceptable.» He stressed that «this dispute must be resolved now,» pledging that the United States would continue to drive progress toward that end.
In his congratulatory note to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump reflected on the «250 years of American-Moroccan history and enduring friendship,» describing a bond «built on mutual trust and respect.»
He praised King Mohammed VI’s «wise leadership,» calling him «a pillar of stability» and underscoring Morocco’s «consistent commitment to advancing peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both Americans and Moroccans.» Trump also highlighted Morocco’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, describing the partnership as «invaluable» for the United States. «In this spirit,» he added, «we will also collaborate to ensure regional security across the Sahel.»
On the economic front, Trump directed his administration to «pursue economic and social development initiatives with Morocco, including within the territory of Western Sahara.» He cited technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as key sectors for strategic collaboration.
«Together, we will forge a new era,» Trump concluded, urging a partnership that prioritizes the interests of both nations.
