Togo-US talks focus on local governance and decentralization progress

The deepening partnership between Togo and the United States took center stage in a high-level meeting between the country’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance and Customary Affairs and the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Togo, Kimberly M. McClure.

The June 2026 working visit by the American diplomat in Lomé centered on shared priorities in territorial governance, decentralization and social cohesion. Both sides reviewed progress in the country’s decentralization process, explored ways to strengthen local governance structures and discussed mechanisms to enhance community cohesion through the active involvement of traditional leaders and grassroots organizations.

Reforms and public service efficiency at local level

During the discussions, the Togolese minister outlined the country’s administrative organization and highlighted recent government reforms designed to boost public service efficiency at the local level. These measures aim to shorten the distance between state services and the citizens they serve, ensuring policies are better aligned with community needs.

Ambassador McClure underscored Washington’s strong interest in Togo’s ongoing decentralization dynamics. She emphasized the United States’ commitment to better grasp the challenges of local governance in order to provide more targeted support for reforms aimed at deepening democracy and citizen participation at the grassroots level.

Regional security and sustainable development priorities

The talks also addressed security challenges facing the sub-region. Both delegations stressed the need to maintain joint efforts for stability, peace and sustainable development across West Africa, recognizing that effective local governance plays a critical role in achieving these objectives.

The meeting underscored the robust cooperation between Togo and the United States and their shared dedication to advancing inclusive governance and local development initiatives that benefit all communities.
