As his diplomatic mission in Togo draws to a close, European Union ambassador Gwilym Ceri Jones met with Prime Minister Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé to highlight a flourishing partnership between Brussels and Lomé. The outgoing diplomat described the collaboration as expanding significantly across multiple critical sectors during his tenure.
During their farewell audience, the EU envoy emphasized the broadening scope of cooperation between Togo and the EU. This partnership now spans sustainable development, infrastructure, energy, governance, education, and security initiatives. The meeting provided an opportunity to assess the progress of ongoing joint efforts and outline future priorities.
Investment programs driving mutual growth
The ambassador underscored the surge in European investment programs in Togo, which he said presents abundant opportunities for both Togolese and European private sectors. This momentum is designed to bolster economic growth and job creation in key industries such as energy, agriculture, and digital technology.
Security and development: an intertwined vision
Gwilym Ceri Jones also highlighted deepened cooperation in peace and security, stressing its inseparable link to development objectives. He noted that the EU has increased its support for Togolese armed forces, aiding counterterrorism efforts and enhancing maritime security along the country’s coast.
The ambassador praised the strong ties between Togo and the EU, expressing confidence that this partnership will continue to strengthen beyond his departure.
Long-term cooperation framework
EU interventions in Togo operate under the 2021-2027 Multi-Year Programming Document (DCP), backed by a €201 million portfolio. The framework directs funding toward three core pillars: human development and socio-economic inclusion, sustainable agro-industries and natural resource management, and fostering a peaceful, resilient Togolese society through inclusive governance.
Tripartite cooperation to boost business climate
In June, a new tripartite cooperation mechanism was launched, uniting the Togolese government, Team Europe, and Eurocham Togo. This permanent consultation platform aims to enhance the business environment, attract European investments, and support economic reforms underway in Togo.
The framework is expected to deliver tangible results, including job creation, private sector growth, and structural economic transformation. Both parties view these initiatives as a testament to the resilience of their partnership, poised to thrive even after Ambassador Jones concludes his mission.
