The worsening humanitarian crisis in Mali: vital access compromised

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is raising a stark alarm regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Mali. Relentless insecurity severely obstructs critical communication routes, pushing millions of already vulnerable people deeper into profound distress.

Since late April, the IRC has reported a distressing surge in armed violence across Mali. The humanitarian organization notes that synchronized attacks and increasing instability on key roadways are significantly impeding the movement of people and essential goods, including fuel and crucial food supplies bound for the capital, Bamako.

This worsening security situation intensifies the precariousness for populations already grappling with an endemic humanitarian crisis. Access to fundamental services is becoming increasingly challenging, while the perils faced by fragile families continue to escalate.

“growing anxiety and uncertainty”

According to Matias Meier, the IRC’s Director of Operations in Mali, the situation has significantly worsened over recent weeks.

“Over the past fourteen days, our teams have observed growing anxiety and uncertainty among families who have already been enduring a profound crisis for years,” he stated.

He emphasized that the prevailing insecurity and disruptions to transportation now make accessing healthcare, safe drinking water, and food exceptionally difficult across various regions of the country. Despite this challenging environment, he noted that local communities and humanitarian aid workers continue to demonstrate “remarkable resilience.”

The IRC reaffirms its commitment to maintaining its on-the-ground presence and continuing its collaboration with local partners and authorities, constantly adapting its interventions to meet the urgent needs of the population.

Mali’s often overlooked humanitarian crisis

To date, Mali persists as one of the least reported humanitarian situations globally. Projections indicate that 5.1 million individuals will require humanitarian assistance by 2026, a figure that includes over 415,000 internally displaced persons.

Throughout Mali, residents face a confluence of compounding challenges: armed conflicts, climate shocks, pervasive food insecurity, and restricted access to essential infrastructure. Women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities are among the most vulnerable, frequently encountering heightened protection risks and diminished access to health services, safe water, and sustainable livelihoods.

In response to the rapidly evolving conditions, the IRC conducts ongoing assessments to ensure the sustainability of its programs within secure environments. Teams operating in affected areas continue to lead humanitarian efforts, implementing enhanced security measures when deemed crucial.
