A landmark agreement between Dakar and the World Bank has unlocked a fresh injection of 340 billion West African CFA francs—roughly 598.4 million US dollars—earmarked for Senegal’s most critical sectors. On August 5, Ousmane Diagana, the World Bank’s Vice President for West and Central Africa, met with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to formalize the funding package, underscoring the international lender’s renewed confidence in the reform agenda championed by the new administration.

Funding to fast-track national priorities

The financial boost targets high-impact initiatives across agriculture, transport, and resilience programs tailored for youth and women—key pillars of inclusive growth. These investments are designed to bridge critical infrastructure gaps and empower vulnerable communities, aligning with the administration’s commitment to equitable development.

Reforms gain global backing

Beyond the direct funding, the World Bank has pledged additional budgetary support and expanded performance-based financing mechanisms. This vote of confidence reflects the lender’s strong belief in the structural reforms launched under President Faye’s leadership, aimed at streamlining public policy efficiency and accelerating Senegal’s economic transformation.

Energy, food security and governance take center stage

During the high-level talks, both sides outlined a shared roadmap: slashing energy costs and accelerating solar transition; strengthening agricultural resilience to bolster food sovereignty; improving the business climate; modernizing public finances; and reinforcing governance frameworks.

A 2050 vision partnership

Discussions also paved the way for a new long-term cooperation framework, aligning with Senegal’s Vision 2050 blueprint—a strategic roadmap designed to reshape the national economy and enhance the country’s global competitiveness over the next three decades.
