Newcastle United has now joined Aston Villa in monitoring João Palhinha, the Portuguese defensive midfielder whose stock remains high in English football despite his struggles in Germany. Club insiders suggest Palhinha could be Newcastle’s top target if their pursuit of Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg from Olympique de Marseille fails to materialise.
The Magpies face a looming gap in their defensive midfield following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães. While the sales generated significant transfer revenue, they left a void that must be filled before the new campaign kicks off under head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Palhinha’s own journey to Bayern Munich has been anything but smooth. After a collapsed transfer from Fulham FC in 2024—due to Fulham’s last-minute veto—the Portuguese finally joined Bayern in 2025 for around €50 million. However, his integration into the squad has been complicated by the club’s changing leadership and tactical preferences. Former boss Thomas Tuchel had initially pushed for his arrival, but by the time he arrived, Tuchel was no longer in charge. His successor, Vincent Kompany, has struggled to find a consistent role for a player whose strengths lie primarily in defensive solidity.
Palhinha’s time at Tottenham Hotspur on loan last season was widely regarded as a success, though a permanent move never materialised due to Bayern’s hefty €35 million valuation. Neither Tottenham, Sporting CP, nor Benfica were willing to meet the club’s financial demands.
Premier League interest in Palhinha intensifies
Interest from English clubs has only grown. Aston Villa’s sporting director Damian Vidagany publicly acknowledged the club’s admiration for Palhinha following their recent pre-season clash with Bayern Munich in Hong Kong. Now, Newcastle United appears to have entered the race as a serious contender.
The Toon Army have financial flexibility after selling two key midfielders—Tonali to Tottenham and Guimarães to Arsenal—for a combined €204.5 million. Yet, with Höjbjerg’s transfer hanging in the balance, Palhinha could quickly become the preferred alternative, offering Premier League clubs a proven defensive presence at a potentially more negotiable price.
Potential alternatives for Newcastle’s midfield
Höjbjerg remains the primary target, given his familiar profile and proven Premier League experience. The Dane, who previously played for Bayern Munich as a youngster before stints at Southampton, Tottenham, and Marseille, would fit seamlessly into Jaissle’s system. But should negotiations for Höjbjerg collapse, Palhinha presents a compelling Plan B.
While Newcastle is one of world football’s wealthiest clubs, recent spending restraint suggests they will approach any deal with financial prudence. Still, with time running short before the transfer window closes, securing a top-class defensive midfielder has become a top priority.
