Mali Morocco ties thrive on economic cooperation at throne celebration

During a high-level gathering in Bamako, officials from Mali and Morocco took stock of the deepening economic ties between their nations. The event, marking the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries under a shared vision of regional development.

Morocco’s strategic vision for Africa

Diplomatic observers noted that Morocco’s expanding influence in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the Sahel, has become a cornerstone of its foreign policy. Thierno Amadou Omar Hass Diallo, a former minister, emphasized the Kingdom’s dynamic approach, stating, “The momentum driving Morocco’s growth today is reshaping its partnerships across Africa, especially in the Sahel. Mali’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara stands as a testament to this evolving relationship.”

A shared commitment to development

Driss Isbayène, Morocco’s ambassador to Mali, underscored the strategic importance of South-South cooperation under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. In his address, he explained that the partnership is built on three pillars: solidarity, mutual respect, and tangible projects that directly benefit local populations. He added, “2026 will be remembered as a milestone in our bilateral relations, as Mali’s historic decision in April to withdraw recognition from the SADR opened new avenues for collaboration.”

Mali’s foreign minister praises Moroccan support

Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, echoed these sentiments, affirming that the anniversary celebration was an opportunity to honor Morocco’s unwavering support. “This milestone reaffirms our deep appreciation for Morocco’s contributions to peace, security, and development across the Sahel, particularly within the AES Confederation,” he stated. He also praised the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which aims to provide landlocked Sahelian nations with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, a project he described as transformative for the region.

Abou Djitteye, a Moroccan-trained professional, shared his optimism about the thriving Mali-Morocco relationship. “It is heartening to witness the strong ties between our countries. As someone trained in Morocco, I am proud to see these bonds flourish and wish His Majesty a long and prosperous reign,” he remarked.
