Authorities are convening an emergency meeting at the Lyon prefecture today to finalize security protocols for the high-risk Champions League playoff rematch between Olympique Lyonnais and Fenerbahçe on August 26. The gathering will bring together local law enforcement, stadium officials, and club representatives to establish a unified security strategy.
Concerns about potential fan violence have intensified as the match has been classified as high-risk. This classification stems from several factors: the significant Turkish diaspora in Lyon, the expected influx of Fenerbahçe supporters, and the club’s recent history of fan-related incidents.
The 2017 Europa League quarterfinal between Lyon and Besiktas serves as a stark reminder of what can go wrong. During that match, clashes erupted between ultras groups, leading to projectile exchanges and heavy police intervention. More recently, in October 2024, Fenerbahçe supporters returned to Groupama Stadium for a group-stage match against Besiktas, which was attended by only 30,000 spectators due to stringent security measures.
Restricted ticket sales to prevent unauthorized resale
The club has taken proactive steps to control ticket distribution. Beginning this Thursday morning, Olympique Lyonnais will open its online ticket portal exclusively to season ticket holders, with prices starting at €12 per ticket. Each season ticket holder will be limited to purchasing up to four tickets for the August 26 match.
Club officials will remind all 26,000 season ticket holders that reselling tickets is strictly prohibited. They will emphasize that buyers are legally responsible for any misconduct by ticket holders, as each ticket is electronically tracked. Violations could result in criminal charges and potential revocation of season ticket privileges without refund.
After the initial phase exclusively for season ticket holders, Olympique Lyonnais will open ticket sales to registered supporters on Monday, subject to availability. This tiered approach ensures that recent ticket purchasers—such as those who attended the Champions League second qualifying round against Sparta Prague—will be excluded from attending the playoff match.
