Gabon’s new national transport company aims to revolutionize public mobility
A significant structural overhaul has led to the establishment of the Compagnie Nationale de Transport (CNT), emerging from the strategic integration of Trans’Urb and SOGATRA. This ambitious initiative, championed by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, seeks to equip Gabon with a contemporary, dependable, and accessible national transport network. More than a mere restructuring, the CNT embodies a refined vision for public service, emphasizing resource optimization and an elevated user experience. This move highlights a commitment to robust governance in Africa, aiming to enhance daily life for its citizens.
Strong social commitment and a modernized fleet
A primary achievement of this merger lies in its human-centric approach. The reform successfully safeguarded 1,303 jobs, ensuring vital social stability for many families. Far from maintaining the status quo, the new company is dedicated to skill enhancement: over 200 drivers have already completed specialized training in road safety protocols and customer service excellence.
Operationally, the CNT is deploying an initial fleet of 142 brand-new buses. Within the bustling Grand Libreville area, this translates into 28 interconnected routes serving 609 designated stops. The interior of the country is also benefiting, with seven interurban services already active, marking the beginning of a phased national coverage. For commuters, the advantages are immediate: reduced waiting times, more frequent rotations, and a secure alternative to informal transport options, fostering improved society in Africa.
State-of-the-art technical infrastructure
To underpin this ambitious undertaking, the former SOGATRA technical base underwent a complete transformation, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Transport, Ulrich Manfoumbi Manfoumbi. Upgraded maintenance workshops, modernized technical pits, and reconfigured parking areas are now fully equipped to accommodate the new fleet under optimal conditions.
A key technological advancement is the integration of a real-time supervision and regulation command center. This central hub provides continuous monitoring of buses, ensuring immediate responsiveness to any traffic incidents or operational challenges.
Towards a sustainable economic model
The CNT is breaking away from previous models by adopting a financially sound framework. Revenue generated from ticket sales will be directly reinvested into the rigorous upkeep of vehicles, comprehensive maintenance, and the ongoing renewal of the fleet, ensuring long-term viability for this critical public service.
