El-Hadji Diouf handed suspended sentence for unpaid child support in Senegal

Former Senegalese football star El-Hadji Diouf has been handed a one-year suspended prison sentence by a Dakar court for failing to meet his child support obligations. The ruling comes after years of legal disputes over unpaid maintenance for his daughter.

The case gained public attention when allegations surfaced online, prompting judicial intervention. The court not only imposed the suspended sentence but also ordered El-Hadji Diouf to pay 10 million FCFA (about €15,244) in compensation to his ex-wife, Valérie Émilie Joséphine Leres Bishop.

His ex-wife had sought over 9 million FCFA in unpaid child support spanning from March 2024 to September 2025, along with an additional 559,200 FCFA for meal expenses during the same period. Records show that the court had previously ruled on these obligations in July 2023, when the couple’s divorce was finalized.

Under the earlier ruling, the mother was granted custody of their daughter, while El-Hadji Diouf was mandated to pay a monthly allowance of 500,000 FCFA for the child’s upkeep. Despite the court’s decision, he reportedly failed to fulfill these financial responsibilities, leading to the current legal consequences.

With an impressive international career of 60 caps and 18 goals for the Senegalese national team, El-Hadji Diouf remains a prominent figure in football history. However, his legal troubles off the pitch have overshadowed his legacy in recent years.
