After 64 years of diplomatic relations, Canada has opened its first embassy in Benin’s capital, Cotonou. The inauguration ceremony, held on August 5, 2026, was led by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, the Honorable Anita Anand, during her official visit to Benin. The event was attended by Benin’s Foreign Minister, Corinne Amori Brunet, diplomatic corps representatives, and key government officials, including Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.

This landmark step underscores the deepening friendship between canada and Benin, as both nations commit to elevating their collaboration across multiple sectors. The establishment of a full-fledged embassy in Cotonou will facilitate stronger political dialogue, enhance oversight of bilateral agreements, and deepen cooperation in critical areas such as trade, security, and human development.

Earlier that same day, the two foreign ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Political and Diplomatic Consultations.
