Algeria delivers four helicopters and military aid to Niger’s armed forces
In line with the directives of Algeria’s President and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, General Saïd Chanegriha, Algeria’s Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), has authorized the transfer of a military aid package to Niger’s armed forces. This includes four helicopters and a range of military equipment, as announced by the Algerian Ministry of National Defence (MDN).
The initiative underscores Algeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral strategic cooperation with Niger, particularly in the defence and security sectors. General Chanegriha’s decision follows the President’s instructions to enhance regional stability and solidarity among neighbouring nations.
Helicopters and equipment dispatched to Niamey
The aid package comprises:
- Two MI-24V attack helicopters
- Two MI-171 utility helicopters
- A shipment of munitions for the helicopters
- Spare parts and maintenance equipment
- Logistical support materials
The MI-24V helicopters are renowned for their combat capabilities, while the MI-171 variants are designed for transport and support missions.
The aircraft departed from Algeria’s secondary deployment base in In Gezzam, located in the 6th Military Region, en route to Niamey’s international airport in Niger. Simultaneously, a military transport aircraft carried the accompanying munitions, spare parts, and logistical supplies to the same destination.
Strengthening regional security and cooperation
In an official statement, the MDN highlighted that this gesture reinforces the historical and fraternal ties between Algeria and Niger. It also reflects Algeria’s ongoing dedication to supporting regional security efforts, capacity-building in defence, and fostering multilateral partnerships.
The statement added, “This operation is part of a broader strategy to ensure stability and security in the region, in coordination with Algeria’s partners.”
