During a session of the African Union Peace and Security Council on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to a political resolution of the Libyan crisis. Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, reiterated the kingdom’s support for national reconciliation and dialogue initiatives involving all Libyan parties.

Arrouchi stressed that the Skhirat Agreement, signed on 17 December 2015 under UN auspices, remains a key reference framework for achieving a lasting settlement. He also underscored the importance of preserving Libya’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The ambassador commended the African Union’s efforts to promote peace, security, and stability across the continent, particularly initiatives aimed at fostering a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

He further recalled meetings held in Tripoli and Zenten that led to an agreement signed on 7 January 2026 in the Libyan capital between representatives of the Government of National Unity and the government based in eastern Libya.

Arrouchi highlighted Morocco’s role in supporting the Libyan political process through its mediation efforts, bringing together the various Libyan factions. He noted that these actions align with international legality, the principles of the Skhirat Agreement, and the understandings reached in Bouznika. Morocco reiterated the need to continue pursuing a political settlement and to avoid military options.
